Fenomenal Foto Friday


I was looking at photographs of arches today for a picture idea for one of my large canvases. I ended up using Teardrop Arch in Monument Valley (featured on Creative Journey) but I did not personally take that photo. But while looking through my photographs of the Colorado Plateau I found this picture taken on Queen's Garden trail at Bryce National Park.

I took this on my sister's and my first roadtrip to Utah. We had walked down Queen's Garden trail and had fully intended to go back up it. But at the bottom there was an option for Navajo Trail. Should you ever go to Bryce National Park let me inform you the way to do this hike is DOWN Navajo and UP Queen's Garden. Leave your car at the visitor center and take the bus that stops at all the overlooks that way you don't have to remember at what trail head you parked it. A real plus when every single muscle in your body is crying for the sleeping bag.

Bryce landscape can be a bit overwhelming to photograph. This one had some depth because of shadows. I took this with my Nikon film camera and 70 to 200 mm lens in the days before I owned a digital. I would send my film off daily and request thumbnails and CD as well as negatives. They were all waiting for me when I got back from the trip. No worries about overheated film in the car.

Oh, and Deb and I decided the National Park service needed to make some changes in its trail signage. They list mileage, vertical drop and degree of difficulty and an approximate time for completion. We think they ought to give a couple hints about memory card size and frames of film and a factor by which you can increase the time.

Fenomenal Foto Friday is a feature of Frani's Blog on Y!360 but this week Yahoo would not let me post that blog. Well, they let me three times but it vanishes and cannot be seen so I am posting it here instead.

    .. I so want to visit this part of the world for real .. maybe for my 50 birthday...the scenery, as your photo shows is amazing.. but I'll be sure to bring lots of photo card memory.

For much of my college career my fitness workout was swimming on the B squad of the swim team. I remember it as the days before heated pools and women coaches. I also remember being so exhausted and cold I could only lean against the shower wall and throw up. Not exactly warm fuzzy images but I was in awesome shape. The Pruning the Crown of Thorns

Crown of Thorns Before I am a lover of Euphorbias . They are from the deserts of Southern Africa and Madagascar. They have evolved physical characteristics and forms similar to cacti of North and South America and are often incorrectly referred to as cacti. My big Crown of Thorns was one of my first of a growing collection of these succulents from the spurge family of Euphorbiaceae. I picked it up as a 6 inch plant in a New Iberia nursery when my sister and I were touring the northern gulf coast. I believe that was 15 years ago. I made an attempt at limiting its height a few years back to allow it to devote more energy to the new branches and make it a denser plant. That failed. And the height of the plant continued to challenge the window space and soon the long branches were leaning over and leaning against the window. Polyethylene Packaging - a Dark Times Journal entry

I was in the fourth grade when our family moved from El Paso, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico. We moved because I could not breathe the air there. I want to say they cracked petroleum there. But what did I know beyond the sky was sometimes yellow and I could not breathe. Mom was pregnant with Debbie, and Gary and I rode in the backseat separated by a round tank full of Dad's tropical fish. Dad had a job with Sealright, Inc which made paper milk cartons. Sealright was a polyethylene packing subsidiary of Phillips 66. The petroleum company. I was rather proud of myself for learning to say that, and to not laugh when adults would stare at me not knowing what to ask about that. Albuquerque smelled better. Then. Before all the freeways were built and the shape of the valley trapped the exhaust down near the ground in the winter months. We lived in the foothills. I could breathe.
